Five Double Crochet Shell (5-dc shell): Work 5 dc in one stitch. For this pattern, shells are worked into each sc from previous row with a sc in the top of the center of each shell. (Video)

Notes: A Shell is simply a group of stitches worked into the same stitch or space. There are many varieties of shells from 3-dc Shells (used in Granny Squares) to 8-trc Shells. An odd number of stitches in the Shell is required if you want to work into the center of the Shell on the following row (as in this square). The number of stitches or chains skipped in between your Shells should equal the number of stitches in your Shell, plus 1 for the stitch you are working in. The Shell is a very common stitch in making afghans and garments.
