Sampler Square #1 - Single Crochet "Moss" Stitch

Designed by Laurinda Reddig of ReCrochetions

Stitches Used:
Single Crochet (sc):
Insert your hook into stitch, YO (yarn over), pull hook out of stitch. You should have 2 loops on your hook. YO, pull through both loops. (video)

New Techniques:
Working in Chain 1 Space (ch-1 sp):
Rather than inserting your hook into the top of the next stitch, you will insert your hook inside the space created by each ch 1 in the previous row, where indicated.

Pattern:
This pattern is now exclusively available in the ReCrochetions Presents: Rowan’s Learn to Crochet Sampler Afghan Book. Available in Right and Left-handed Editions (see links -->). The book also contains 4 more simple baby blanket patterns and a newborn hat, and 30 complete step-by-step tutorial.

Tip: Keep your chains for your chain spaces quite loose throughout. It is easy to get too tight making the square much smaller than you intend. This stitch may take a couple of tries to get the hang of keeping your tension from being too tight or too loose.

Notes: The “Moss” stitch is often used when making crocheted garments, as it provides a stretchier fabric than most crochet stitches. Although crocheted garments can be beautiful, the lack of stretch in the finished item is one reason there are so many more patterns for knitted garments than crocheted ones. The moss stitch and other techniques can improve the drape and fit of crocheted garments.
