New Stitches /Techniques:
Spike Single Crochet (Ssc): Insert hook below the next stitch, 1 row down (this means instead of inserting in the top of the stitch, you will be inserting into the same space that stitch was worked), Yo, pull loop through and up to the top of your work, Yo, pull through both loops.

The book also contains 4 more simple baby blanket patterns and a newborn hat, and 30 complete step-by-step tutorial.
Notes: Spikes are another stitch where the trick is in where you insert your hook. Once you figure that out, you are doing a basic single crochet stitch. Spike stitches can be made much longer by inserting your hook 2, 3, or 4 rows beneath the row you are working. Once you have a few rows of sc, you can experiment with combining different lengths of spike stitches.
On Thursday I met a mother whose 4 1/2 month old daughter was in the NICUs at both Legacy Salmon Creek and Emanuel. Her health situation was very different than Rowan's, but they used a lot of the same procedures, so she asked me a lot of questions. Her daughter was not at Salmon Creek long enough to receive one of our blankets, but at Emanuel (where Rowan spent her one day of life) she was given a quilt and afghan. It was very strange to see this tiny little person, healthy and alive, who spent a week unconscious while her parents had to wait and see. Her mother truly understands how amazing it is that most babies actually come out healthy when there are so many things that can go wrong, and what a miracle her tiny daughter is.
